Fence Installation & Repair in Morro Bay: DIY vs. Calling a Pro

Some fence repairs are weekend projects. Others will bite you if you're not careful. Here's what I've learned doing fence work on the Central Coast.

Fence Installation & Repair in Morro Bay: DIY vs. Calling a Pro

I've been the guy fixing fences in Morro Bay for years now, and I can tell you honestly — fence work looks simpler than it actually is. A lot of homeowners come to me after a DIY attempt that didn't quite work out the way they hoped. Sometimes it's fixable. Sometimes we end up replacing entire sections that could've been done right the first time.

The truth is, some of this work you can absolutely do yourself. Other parts? That's where things get tricky. Let me walk you through what I see out here on the Central Coast.

What You Can Handle Yourself

Basic Post Repairs and Small Board Replacements

If you've got one rotted board or a post that's slightly loose, you're probably fine tackling that. You'll need a reciprocating saw (or a handsaw if you want the workout), a level, some stainless steel fasteners — 16-gauge screws hold up way better than nails in our salt air — and basic carpentry skills.

I've watched plenty of homeowners pull out a single board, measure the replacement, cut it, and install it without any real drama. The dry summer weather we're in right now is actually ideal for this kind of work. You're not fighting marine layer moisture or rainy days that slow curing time.

Minor Fence Maintenance

Staining, sealing, or painting an existing fence? That's your project. Grab a pressure washer (rent one if you don't own it), some quality exterior stain rated for coastal conditions, and a couple of afternoons. The ocean salt-air corrosion we deal with up here means you want to use products rated for salt exposure, not just anything off the shelf.

I had a customer on Olive Street in Morro Bay who decided to restain her fence in August — smart timing, given the dry conditions. She did the whole thing herself and it turned out beautiful. The key was pressure washing first to get all the salt buildup off the boards.

Where DIY Gets Risky

Installing New Posts

This is where I see most mistakes. You need the hole deep enough (usually 2–3 feet, depending on frost line and wind load), the post perfectly plumb, concrete set properly, and adequate drainage so water doesn't pool around the base. One inch out of plumb might not look like much, but over 20 feet of fence, it compounds.

I came out to a property near the Morro Bay dunes last year to look at a fence a homeowner had installed. The posts were set, but they'd underestimated how deep the holes needed to be for that particular location — the soil there is clay-heavy and doesn't drain fast. One winter with our typical rain, and those posts were going to shift. We ended up resetting them. It would've been a single day's work if we'd done it right from the start.

Dealing with Property Lines and Permits

Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo County have specific setback requirements and permit rules. Some fences need permits, others don't, depending on height, location, and what's next to you. If you're installing near a neighbor's property or right on the line, you need to know exactly where your property ends. I can't tell you how many times I've had to have uncomfortable conversations with neighbors because a fence went up 6 inches over the line.

Willy — that's me — always confirms property lines before I swing a shovel. It takes a phone call to the county assessor's office and sometimes a surveyor's mark, but it beats the headache of removing a fence you built in the wrong place.

Working with Difficult Terrain or Existing Infrastructure

If your property has slopes, buried utilities, or you're working near established trees with root systems, this stops being a weekend project. A slope means each post needs its own calculations for depth and angle. Utilities — water lines, gas, electrical — need locating before you dig. Trees with established root systems can complicate post placement and drainage. This is the work I do regularly, and it requires experience and proper equipment to avoid mistakes that create much bigger problems.

The Real Structural Considerations

Honestly, the biggest risk with DIY fence work isn't cosmetic. It's structural. A fence that looks fine but shifts, settles unevenly, or has posts that fail after a year isn't just an eyesore — it's a safety liability. If someone gets hurt because your fence failed, you've got a real problem on your hands.

I've inspected plenty of fences installed by homeowners and contractors who didn't account for our coastal conditions. The combination of salt air, wind coming off the ocean, and seasonal dry-wet cycles is harder on materials and fasteners than most people realize. Your stainless steel fasteners, treated posts, and sealed wood matter out here. Cut corners, and you're replacing the fence in five years instead of fifteen.

When to Call Willy

If you're building new fence from the ground up, dealing with property line questions, working on a slope, navigating permit requirements, or you've already started a DIY project and realized it's more complex than you thought — that's when you call me.

I handle full installations and repairs across Morro Bay and the entire Central Coast. I also specialize in the tricky stuff: property line confirmations, sloped terrain, coastal salt-air durability, and making sure everything meets San Luis Obispo County standards. I've dealt with the clay soil drainage issues, the wind exposure near the dunes, and all the seasonal considerations that come with working out here.

Most of my fence jobs are completed same-week, and I can get you a free estimate within 24 hours. I'll tell you straight what needs to happen and what makes sense for your specific situation — whether that's a full installation or guidance on what you can safely DIY.
